As part of its Constitutional obligation in providing civic and voter education to citizens of Liberia, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has embarked on a nationwide campaign.
The training brought together eighty-two (82) local community-based organizations across the country to promote community ownership.
The Regional training which kicked off on November 18, 2022, will end on December 2, 2022, simultaneously in the 15 counties of Liberia.
Giving the overview of the program, the Director of Civil and voter education, Mr. Paul Wlor Wilson said as the 2023 elections draw closer the NEC has taken contentment in providing civic and voter education for citizens of Liberia.
Mr. Wilson added that the National Election Commission is using the bottom-to-top approach to get the community involved in the process through different community-based organizations.
He lamented that in previous elections in Liberia there have been a huge number of invalid votes which have been attributed negatively to the nation, noting that because of the lack of voters and civic education.
He disclosed that civic and voter education empowerment is intended for the local community-based organizations to understand and know how to engage citizens of Liberia in carrying on their political franchise.
For her part, the chairperson of the National Election Commission, Madam Davidetta-Brown Lansana said the NEC along with the United Nations organization contracted civil society organizations to train and deploy them across the country to provide voters education for the citizens.
She added that the NEC and its partners have thought it wise in working with the community-based organizations, noting the CBOs have a direct link with the citizens, stressing that people within the locality with believe in them and will be willing to listen.
