Monrovia, Liberia– The Liberia National Police (LNP) has called on peaceful protesters to refrain from marching in the streets of Monrovia in solidarity with President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso, urging them instead to seek an official permit from the Ministry of Justice to ensure their right to assemble legally.

The gathering, organized by students’ groups and activist organizations, sought to demonstrate solidarity with President Traore, who has garnered attention for his stance against colonial rule and imperialism in Africa.

Protesters had taken to the streets, waving placards and chanting slogans supporting Traore’s vision for a sovereign and free Burkina Faso.

However, the LNP intervened, citing that they have received calls that raise concerns of the marching, so therefore the protesters should leave the street and reorganize their solidarity march.

Activists argue that the struggles seen in Burkina Faso resonate with many Liberians, bringing issues of national sovereignty and autonomy to the forefront.

“We want to stand with our brothers and sisters in Burkina Faso,” said Markies Nebo , a prominent youth leader among the protesters. “We believe that our struggles are interconnected, and standing together in peace is a powerful message against colonialism and imperialism.”

As the situation unfolded, many of the protesters expressed their disappointment at being asked to disperse by the LNP.

However, they acknowledged the importance of following legal procedures. “We will not let this setback deter our spirit,” Nebo added. “ Even though we have countless written the ministry of justice to give our permit but to no avail , We will go back to the Ministry of Justice, obtain our permit, and return to show our solidarity.”
